本书采用定性研究和定量研究相结合的设计，分析了中国学生对其学术素养中英语阅读的看法，以及接触真实的英语环境如何促进他们的阅读能力发展。在定量研究中，对受试者的读者背景知识、阅读速率、单词阅读准确率、复述能力和理解能力进行测量。研究发现学生认为真实的英语环境通过以下方式帮助了他们：（1）提供了一个地道的英语实践环境，（2）具有丰富而宝贵的英语学习资源，以及（3）是一个可以安心使用英语，普遍鼓励和支持的环境。
