《守夜人》从余光中十三本诗集及尚未集结成册的诗作中，选取八十二组诗作，约占作者诗作总量十四分之一，**分量。从一九九二年的初版，至今已三十一年，每十二年改版一次。书中收录余光中多阕代表作，如《白玉苦瓜》《乡愁》《如果远方有战争》等，尚有具传奇色彩的《山中传奇》《黄昏》，咏叹艺术家的《永念肖邦》《戏李白》等，自况心境的《七十自喻》《江湖上》《问烛》等，将名山佳景、历史遗迹化为史诗巨著的《西螺大桥》《荷兰吊桥》等，以及尚未集结成册的诗作《送楼克礼自丹佛西行》《半途》。
