插图:New Years Day is the first day of the year, January 1st. It is a celebration of the old year andthe new one to come. New Year festivals are among the oldest and most universally observed. Insome countries, parties are thrown on New Year's Eve which last until the early hours of NewYear's Day. It is traditional to greet the New Year at midnight and then celebrate at least the firstfew minutes in the company of friends and family. Many people make New Year resolutions——alist of decisions about how they will live during the coming year, which may or may not be kept. Each year huge crowds of people celebrate New Year's Eve in Times Square in New YorkCity. At midnight, confetti (五彩纸屑) is thrown from the tall buildings surrounding the square. This tradition started as early as 1904 when the New York Times inaugurated its newheadquarters in Times Square and celebrated the renaming of Longacre Square to Times Square. The first Ball Lowering celebration was held on December 31, 1907 and is now a worldwidesymbol of the turn of the New Year, seen via satellite by more than one billion people each year.At 11:59 p.m., the Ball begins its descent as millions of voices unite to count down the finalseconds of the year, and celebrate the beginning of a new year full of hopes, challenges, changesand dreams. Auld Lang Syne is sung at the stroke (报时的钟声) of midnight in almost everyEnglish-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year. It wouldn't be New Year withoutit. Some of the New Year's traditions include: the making of New Year's resolution; the use of ababy to signify the New Year and the Tournament of Roses Parade.
