EmilyDickinsonwroteherwhimsical,dartingversewithsublimeindifferencetoanynotionofbeingademocraticorpopularpoet.Herwork,fardifferentfromthatofeitherWhitmanorLongfellow,illustratedthefactthatonecouldtakeasinglehouseholdandaninactivelife,andmakeenchantingpoetryoutofit.
MissDickinsonwasborninAmherst,Massachusetts,whereherfatherwasaprominentlawyerandpoliticianandwherehergrandfatherhadestablishedanacademyandcollege.Emily'sfamilywasverycloselyknitandsheandhersisterremainedathomeanddidnotmarry.EmilyseldomleftAmherst;sheattendedcollegeinanearbytownforoneyear,andlatermadeonetripasfarasWashingtonandtwoorthreetripstoBoston。After1862shebecameatotalrecluse,notleavingherhousenorseeingevenclosefriends.Herearlylettersanddescriptionsofherselfinheryouthrevealanattractivegirlwithalivelywit.Herlaterretirementfromtheworld,thoughperhapsaffectedbyanunhappyloveaffair,seemsmainlytohaveresultedfromherownpersonality,fromadesiretoseparateherselffromtheworld.Therangeofherpoetrysuggestsnotherlimitedexperiencesbutthepowerofhercreativityandimagination.
Whenshebeganwritingpoetry,Emilyhadrelativelylittleformaleducation.ShedidknowShakespeareandclassicalmythologyandwasespeciallyinterestedinwomenauthorssuchasElizabethBrowningandtheBront~sisters.ShewasalsoacquaintedwiththeworksofEmerson,ThoreauandHawthorne.Thoughshedidnotbelieveintheconventionalreligionofherfamily,shehadstudiedtheBible,andmanyofherpoemsresemblehymnsinform.
